Edging Calculator

A 20 by 10 foot rectangle needs 60 feet of edging. Ten percent waste makes 66 feet, which is 9 pieces of 8 feet and 36 stakes.

Last updated . Piece length starts at 8 feet and stakes start at 4 per piece. Both are planning figures, not a product. Waste starts at 10 percent. No prices.

Choose a rectangle, a circle, or a perimeter you measured. Pieces and stakes follow that length.

Pavers inside the border are the paver calculator. Fabric under a bed is the landscape fabric calculator.

An 8 foot piece and 4 stakes on it are planning figures, not a product. Four stakes on 8 feet is one every 2 feet if you space them yourself.

How the edging is counted

A rectangle is 2 × (length + width). A circle is π × diameter. A custom line is the perimeter you already measured. Waste multiplies that length, then the piece length divides it and the count rounds up. Stakes are the piece count times the stakes on each piece.

The 20 by 10 foot rectangle is 60.00 feet. Ten percent makes 66.00 feet. 66 ÷ 8 is 8.25, which rounds up to 9 pieces. Four stakes on each piece is 36. The 8 foot piece and the 4 stakes are planning numbers. Change them to the piece in your hand.

Rectangle, circle, and a measured perimeter

Piece length stays 8 feet, stakes stay at 4, and waste stays at 10 percent.

Worked example

Leave the shape on Rectangle, the sides at 20 ft and 10 ft, the piece at 8 ft, the stakes at 4, and the waste at 10 percent. Perimeter reads 60.00 ft · 18.29 m. With waste reads 66.00 ft · 20.12 m. Pieces read 9. Stakes read 36.

Frequently asked questions

How much edging do I need?

Leave the shape on Rectangle, the sides at 20 ft and 10 ft, the piece at 8 ft, the stakes at 4, and the waste at 10 percent. Perimeter reads 60.00 ft · 18.29 m. With waste reads 66.00 ft · 20.12 m. Pieces read 9. Stakes read 36.

How is the perimeter counted?

A rectangle is 2 × (length + width). 2 × (20 + 10) = 60.00 ft. A circle is π × diameter. A custom shape is the perimeter you type, with no extra geometry. Waste is applied after that length, and the piece count rounds up.

How many stakes is 4 per piece?

Stakes are the ordered pieces times the stakes per piece. Nine pieces at 4 stakes are 36. Four stakes on an 8 foot piece is a planning spacing of about 2 feet, not a stake sold with a brand of edging. There is no price.

How much edging is a 16 foot circle?

Switch the shape to Circle and leave the diameter at 16 ft. Perimeter reads 50.27 ft · 15.32 m, which is π × 16. With waste reads 55.29 ft · 16.85 m. Pieces read 7. Stakes read 28.

What if I already measured the perimeter?

Switch the shape to Custom perimeter and leave the length at 100 ft. Perimeter reads 100.00 ft · 30.48 m. With waste reads 110.00 ft · 33.53 m. Pieces read 14. Stakes read 56. Curves and notches are already inside the 100 if you measured them.

What if there is no waste?

Go back to Rectangle and set waste to 0. Perimeter stays 60.00 ft · 18.29 m, and the waste line matches it. 60 ÷ 8 is 7.5, which still rounds up, so pieces read 8 and stakes read 32. The 10 percent default is what pushes 8.25 pieces up to the order of 9.

Is this the paver or the fabric count?

No. This page is the border: the perimeter, the pieces, and the stakes. Pavers inside that border are the paver calculator. Fabric under a bed is the landscape fabric calculator. An 8 foot piece is a planning length. Type the length of the piece you are buying.
