Cylinder Volume Calculator
A 4 ft diameter and a 10 ft height is 125.66 cubic feet, 3.56 cubic meters, 940.03 US gallons, and 3,558.40 liters.
Last updated . It opens on a vertical cylinder, diameter 4 ft and height 10 ft. Each dimension has its own unit, from millimeters through yards. US gallons use 7.48052.

Cylinder, tank, or pipe
Volume = π × radius² × length. A horizontal tank uses the circular segment for the liquid depth. Depth equal to the diameter is a full tank. Pipe mode also prints the inner volume of one foot. One cubic foot is multiplied by 7.48052 to get US gallons. A sonotube pour, with bags, is the concrete column page.

How the cylinder volume is calculated
Volume = π × radius² × length. Enter a diameter and the radius is half of it, or enter the radius directly. Length and diameter can use different units. The default 4 ft diameter and 10 ft height is π × 2² × 10 = 40π cubic feet, which displays as 125.66. Cubic meters use 0.028316846592 cubic meters per cubic foot. Liters are cubic meters × 1,000.
US gallons = cubic feet × 7.48052. That factor is 1,728 ÷ 231, rounded. The panel multiplies the full cubic feet, then rounds the gallon line. 125.66 × 7.48052 rounds to 940.00, but the gallon line reads 940.03.
A horizontal tank uses the circular segment. The area is (r² ÷ 2) × (θ − sin θ), with θ = 2 arccos((r − depth) ÷ r) in radians. The same area is r² arccos((r − depth) ÷ r) − (r − depth) × √(2rh − h²). A depth of zero is empty. A depth at or above the diameter is the full cylinder. The length is the tank length, not the liquid depth.
Pipe mode is the same full cylinder, using the inside diameter, and it also prints one foot of that pipe. Pipe results use four decimals for cubic feet, gallons, and liters, and six decimals for cubic meters.

Worked example
Leave the vertical cylinder at a 4 ft diameter and a 10 ft height. Cubic feet reads 125.66. Cubic meters reads 3.56. US gallons reads 940.03. Liters reads 3,558.40. Switching the size to a 2 ft radius does not change those four lines.
Cylinder volume questions
What is the volume of a cylinder 4 feet in diameter and 10 feet tall?
Leave the shape on Vertical cylinder, the size on Diameter, the diameter at 4 ft, and the height at 10 ft. Cubic feet reads 125.66. Cubic meters reads 3.56. US gallons reads 940.03. Liters reads 3,558.40. The volume is π × 2² × 10 cubic feet. Gallons multiply that full volume by 7.48052. Rounding 125.66 × 7.48052 first would show 940.00, which is not the line on the panel.
Does a radius of 2 feet match a diameter of 4 feet?
Set Size entered as to Radius and the size to 2 ft. Leave the height at 10 ft and the shape on Vertical cylinder. Cubic feet still reads 125.66. Cubic meters reads 3.56. US gallons reads 940.03. Liters reads 3,558.40. The radius is half the diameter.
How much liquid is in a horizontal tank that is half full?
Choose Horizontal tank, partial fill. Set the diameter to 8 ft, the length to 20 ft, and the liquid depth to 4 ft. Cubic feet reads 502.65. Cubic meters reads 14.23. US gallons reads 3,760.12. Liters reads 14,233.60. A 4 ft depth is the radius of an 8 ft tank, so the segment is half the full tank before rounding. The full tank is 1,005.31 cubic feet and 7,520.24 gallons. Twice 3,760.12 is 7,520.24. Twice 502.65 is 1,005.30 because each cubic-foot line is already rounded.
What if that tank holds only 2 feet of liquid?
Keep the horizontal tank at an 8 ft diameter and a 20 ft length. Set the liquid depth to 2 ft. Cubic feet reads 196.54. Cubic meters reads 5.57. US gallons reads 1,470.22. Liters reads 5,565.37. The area is the circular segment (r² ÷ 2) × (θ − sin θ), with θ = 2 arccos((r − depth) ÷ r) in radians.
What is the full volume of that tank?
Set the liquid depth to 8 ft, the same as the diameter. Cubic feet reads 1,005.31. Cubic meters reads 28.47. US gallons reads 7,520.24. Liters reads 28,467.20. A depth at or above the diameter is the full cylinder, π × radius² × length.
How much does a 4 inch pipe hold per foot?
Choose Pipe, inner volume. Leave the size as Diameter. Set the diameter to 4 and the unit to in. Set the length to 1 ft. Cubic feet reads 0.0873. Cubic meters reads 0.002471. US gallons reads 0.6528. Liters reads 2.4711. Per foot reads 0.0873 ft³ · 0.6528 gal. Pipe lines use four decimals, and cubic meters use six, because a one-foot length of small pipe is a small volume. The radius is 2 inches.
Is this the sonotube calculator?
No. This page is the water or the air inside a cylinder, a tank, or a pipe. A round concrete pour, including a sonotube, with cubic yards and bags, is the concrete column calculator.
