Pool Volume Calculator
A 32 ft by 16 ft pool, 3 ft shallow and 6 ft deep, holds 2,304.00 cubic feet and 17,235.12 US gallons.
Last updated . The form is set to a 32 ft by 16 ft rectangle, shallow 3 ft and deep 6 ft. Gallons on this page are cubic feet times 7.48052.
A pool volume calculator for the water: rectangle, round, or oval, at one depth or at the average of a shallow end and a deep end.
Sand under the pool: pool sand calculator. Sand in the filter: pool filter sand calculator. A garden pond with a liner: pond calculator.
Pool water volume
The gallon count is cubic feet times 7.48052, from 1,728 cubic inches divided by the 231 cubic inches in a US gallon. Average depth is the shallow end and the deep end added, then halved, and it assumes a straight floor. An oval is an ellipse. Sand under the shell, and sand in a filter, are separate calculators.

How pool gallons are calculated
A rectangle is length × width × depth. A round pool is π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × depth. An oval is an ellipse, π × (length ÷ 2) × (width ÷ 2) × depth. When the depth menu says shallow and deep, the depth used is (shallow + deep) ÷ 2. That average assumes a straight slope. It is not a hopper, a bench, or a beach entry.
The opening pool is 32 × 16 × 4.5 = 2,304.00 cubic feet, and 2,304 × 7.48052 = 17,235.12 gallons. Liters come from the unrounded cubic meters times 1,000, so the line reads 65,242.01. Multiplying the rounded 65.24 cubic meters by 1,000 would show 65,240, and that is not the liter line.
This page is the water only. It does not estimate sand under an above-ground pool, and it does not estimate sand in a filter tank.

Worked example
Leave 32 ft by 16 ft, with a 3 ft shallow end and a 6 ft deep end. Cubic feet reads 2,304.00. US gallons reads 17,235.12. Cubic meters reads 65.24. Liters reads 65,242.01.
Pool gallon questions
How many gallons is a 32 by 16 pool with a 3 foot shallow end and a 6 foot deep end?
Leave the shape on Rectangle and the depth on Shallow and deep average. Length stays 32 ft, width stays 16 ft, shallow stays 3 ft, and deep stays 6 ft. Cubic feet reads 2,304.00. US gallons reads 17,235.12. Cubic meters reads 65.24. Liters reads 65,242.01. The average depth is (3 + 6) ÷ 2 = 4.5 ft, and 32 × 16 × 4.5 = 2,304. Gallons are 2,304 × 7.48052. Liters use the full cubic meters × 1,000, so the line is 65,242.01 rather than 65.24 × 1,000.
How many gallons is that pool at a constant 4 foot depth?
Set Depth to One constant depth and leave the depth at 4 ft. Length stays 32 ft and width stays 16 ft. Cubic feet reads 2,048.00. US gallons reads 15,320.10. Cubic meters reads 57.99. Liters reads 57,992.90. The volume is 32 × 16 × 4.
How many gallons is a round pool 24 feet across and 4 feet deep?
Choose Round and One constant depth. Set the diameter to 24 ft and the depth to 4 ft. Cubic feet reads 1,809.56. US gallons reads 13,536.43. Cubic meters reads 51.24. Liters reads 51,240.96. The area is π × 12², times 4 feet of depth.
How many gallons is a 30 by 15 oval pool at 4 feet deep?
Choose Oval and One constant depth. Set the length to 30 ft, the width to 15 ft, and the depth to 4 ft. Cubic feet reads 1,413.72. US gallons reads 10,575.34. Cubic meters reads 40.03. Liters reads 40,032.00. An oval is an ellipse: π × (length ÷ 2) × (width ÷ 2) × depth.
Why are gallons cubic feet times 7.48052?
A US gallon is 231 cubic inches. A cubic foot is 1,728 cubic inches. Dividing those gives 7.48051948… gallons per cubic foot, and the pool panel uses 7.48052. It multiplies the unrounded cubic feet, then shows two decimals on the gallon line.
Does the average depth work for a hopper or a beach entry?
No. Average depth is (shallow + deep) ÷ 2, and it assumes the floor is a straight slope from one end to the other. A hopper, a bench, or a beach entry is a different shape. Measure those in pieces, or use a constant depth only for the part that is flat.
Does this page include the sand under the pool or the sand in the filter?
No. This page is the water. Sand under an above-ground pool is the pool sand calculator. Sand inside a filter tank is the pool filter sand calculator. Neither of those weights is a gallon count.
