Sandbox Sand Calculator

A sandbox looks simple until you order sand. Too little is frustrating; too much wastes money. This tool estimates sand volume and weight from the inside length, width, and fill depth of a rectangular box, using about 1600 kg/m³ as a typical dry bulk density (adjust if your supplier quotes otherwise).

How this calculator works

The math is straightforward:

  • Volume = length × width × depth (use internal box dimensions and the depth of sand you actually want—not always flush to the rim)
  • Convert volume to cubic meters, cubic feet, or cubic yards with the unit selector
  • Weight = volume × density (default ≈ 1600 kg/m³)
  • Bags = total kilograms ÷ bag size, rounded up (default 50 kg bags)

Recommended sandbox depth

Depth depends on age and how kids use the box:

  • 4–6 in (about 10–15 cm) — toddlers and light play
  • 6–8 in (about 15–20 cm) — typical backyard sandbox
  • 8–12 in (about 20–30 cm) — deeper digging play

Very shallow sand limits play; very deep layers cost more without always adding safety or fun.

Types of sand to use

Not every sand belongs in a play box. Common recommendations:

  • Play sand — sold for children’s use, often washed
  • Washed sand — lower fines and debris than some rough grades
  • Silica-free or low-dust options — when available, better for air quality around kids

Avoid using construction sand or sharp sand as a default for children unless a supplier confirms it is appropriate—grading and cleanliness vary.

Where this calculator is used

  • Backyard sandboxes
  • Playground or daycare fill planning
  • DIY wooden sandbox builds
  • Refilling pre-built plastic or timber boxes

The tool assumes a square or rectangular interior. Irregular shapes need to be split into rectangles or estimated separately.

Example calculation

Sandbox:

  • Length 6 ft, width 6 ft, sand depth 6 in (0.5 ft)

Step 1 — Volume = 6 × 6 × 0.5 = 18 ft³

Converted (check the tool with the same inputs):

  • About 0.51 m³
  • Weight ≈ 800–815 kg at 1600 kg/m³ (exact value depends on rounding)
  • At 50 kg per bag, that is roughly 16–17 bags when you round up

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Wrong sand type — construction grades may be unsafe or unpleasant for play
  • Ignoring settlement — sand compacts; plan a small top-up after the first weeks
  • Poor drainage — standing water ruins sand; consider base slope, gravel, or fabric per your design
  • Guessing depth — measure the usable depth you will actually fill

Practical tips

  • Add roughly 10% extra for settling and spillage on the first fill
  • Use a drainage-friendly base where appropriate (e.g. landscape fabric, crushed stone) per your plan
  • Cover the sandbox when not in use
  • Level and rake the surface after filling

Safety

Choose age-appropriate play sand, keep the area clean, and supervise young children. Cover the box to reduce debris and animals. Follow local product guidance and health recommendations.

Frequently asked questions

How many bags of sand do I need for a sandbox?

It scales with box size and depth. Small residential boxes often fall in a loose 10–20 bag range when bags are ~50 kg, but always run your length × width × depth through the calculator above.

What is the best sand for a sandbox?

Prefer play sand, washed sand, or products labeled for children. Consider low-dust / silica-aware options when sold for that purpose.

Does sandbox sand need to be replaced?

Yes, from time to time—for hygiene, contamination, and texture. Frequency depends on use, climate, and whether the box stays covered.

Can I use regular construction sand?

Not recommended for kids’ play by default—it may be sharp, dirty, or poorly graded for skin contact. Use sand intended for play or get written confirmation from the supplier.
