Concrete Weight Calculator

A 10 ft by 10 ft slab, 4 inches thick, at 150 lb/ft³ weighs 5,000.00 lb, 2.50 short tons, and 2,267.96 kg.

Last updated . Dimensions start at 10 ft by 10 ft by 4 in. The density starts at 150 lb/ft³ for reinforced stone concrete. One short ton is 2,000 lb.

A concrete weight calculator for pounds, short tons, and kilograms. Use the dimensions, or type a volume. The density list is the cited dead-load values, not a price and not a mix design.

Concrete weight

144 and 150 lb/ft³ are ASCE/SEI 7-16 Table C3.1-2 for plain and reinforced stone concrete, including gravel. 100 lb/ft³ is a planning value inside that table’s 70–105 lb/ft³ load-bearing light aggregate and the NRMCA CIP 36 range of 90–120 lb/ft³. A typed density replaces the list. This is not a mix design.

How the weight is calculated

Pounds = cubic feet × density in lb/ft³. Short tons = pounds ÷ 2,000. Kilograms = pounds × 0.45359237. The default slab is 10 × 10 × (4 ÷ 12) = 33.333… cubic feet, shown as 33.33. The weight uses the full product, 5,000.00 lb, not 33.33 × 150.

Reinforced stone concrete, including gravel, is 150 lb/ft³ in ASCE/SEI 7-16 Table C3.1-2, Minimum Densities for Design Loads from Materials. Plain stone concrete, including gravel, is 144 lb/ft³ in that table. One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so those densities are 4,050.00 lb and 3,888.00 lb per cubic yard.

The lightweight choice is 100 lb/ft³. ASCE/SEI 7-16 Table C3.1-2 lists load-bearing light aggregate from 70 to 105 lb/ft³. NRMCA CIP 36 gives structural lightweight concrete an equilibrium density of 90 to 120 lb/ft³, against normal-weight concrete at 140 to 150 lb/ft³. PCA, Design and Control of Concrete Mixtures, Chapter 5, gives freshly mixed normal-weight concrete as 140 to 150 lb/ft³ and structural lightweight as about 90 to 120 lb/ft³. 100 lb/ft³ is a planning value inside the overlap. It is not a supplier’s ticket. Type another density when you have one.

Weight of one cubic yard

Switch the input to a volume and leave it at 1 yd³. The volume pages on this site stay at 2,400 kg/m³, which is 4,045.33 lb per cubic yard.

Worked example

Enter 10 ft by 10 ft by 4 in and leave the density at 150 lb/ft³. Volume reads 33.33 ft³ · 1.23 yd³. Density used reads 150.00 lb/ft³. Pounds read 5,000.00 lb. Short tons read 2.50. Kilograms read 2,267.96 kg.

Concrete weight questions

How much does a 10 by 10 slab, 4 inches thick, weigh?

Leave length and width at 10 ft, thickness at 4 in, and the density on reinforced 150 lb/ft³. Volume reads 33.33 ft³ · 1.23 yd³. Pounds read 5,000.00 lb. Short tons read 2.50. Kilograms read 2,267.96 kg. The weight is 10 × 10 × (4 ÷ 12) × 150 = 5,000 lb. The yard line is rounded.

How much does one cubic yard of concrete weigh?

Switch the input to a volume, leave the volume at 1 yd³, and leave the density at 150 lb/ft³. Volume reads 27.00 ft³ · 1.00 yd³. Pounds read 4,050.00 lb. Short tons read 2.03. Kilograms read 1,837.05 kg. 27 × 150 = 4,050, and 4,050 ÷ 2,000 = 2.025, which rounds to 2.03 short tons.

What is plain concrete at 144 lb/ft³?

Choose normal weight, plain stone, 144 lb/ft³, and use 1 yd³. Pounds read 3,888.00 lb. Short tons read 1.94. Kilograms read 1,763.57 kg. 144 lb/ft³ is the plain stone concrete value, including gravel, in ASCE/SEI 7-16 Table C3.1-2. 27 × 144 = 3,888.

What is the lightweight density?

The lightweight choice is 100 lb/ft³. That is a planning value, not a tested mix. It sits inside the ASCE/SEI 7-16 range of 70–105 lb/ft³ for load-bearing light aggregate and inside the NRMCA CIP 36 structural lightweight range of 90–120 lb/ft³. One cubic yard at 100 lb/ft³ reads 2,700.00 lb, 1.35 short tons, and 1,224.70 kg.

Why do the other concrete pages say 4,045.33 lb per yard?

Those volume pages start at 2,400 kg/m³. That planning default is 4,045.33 lb per cubic yard, about 149.83 lb/ft³. This page uses the ASCE dead-load table instead: 150 lb/ft³ reinforced is 4,050.00 lb per yard, and 144 lb/ft³ plain is 3,888.00 lb per yard. 150 lb/ft³ is 2,402.77 kg/m³, which is the same neighborhood as 2,400 and not the same rounded number.

Can I type my own density?

Yes. Type a number in lb/ft³ and it replaces the list. Leave the box blank to use 150, 144, or 100. Switch the input to a volume of 1 yd³ and type 145. Pounds read 3,915.00 lb. Short tons read 1.96. Kilograms read 1,775.81 kg. That is 27 × 145. PCA’s range for freshly mixed normal-weight concrete is 140–150 lb/ft³, so 145 is inside that range and is not a separate code value.

Is this the concrete volume calculator?

No. This page is the weight from a volume and a density. Yards for a pour, still at the 2,400 kg/m³ planning start, are the concrete calculator. A slab, a footing, and premix bags stay on those pages.
